For this commentary, the entire chapter from the Second Book of Adam and Eve is repeated from the first installment a few days ago when we left off with verse verse 11 where we begin today.
The subject. What it was like in the days of Noah and how that compares to the present times.
1 AFTER Cain had gone down to the land of dark
soil, and his children had multiplied therein, there was one of them, whose
name was Genun, son of Lamech the blind who slew Cain.
2 But as to this Genun, Satan came into him in his childhood;
and he made sundry trumpets and horns, and string instruments, cymbals and
psalteries, and lyres and harps, and flutes; and he played on them at all times
and at every hour.
3 And when he played on them, Satan came into them, so that from
among them were heard beautiful and sweet sounds, that ravished the heart.
4 Then he gathered companies upon companies to play on them; and
when they played, it pleased well the children of Cain, who inflamed themselves
with sin among themselves, and burnt as with fire; while Satan inflamed their
hearts, one with another, and increased lust among them.
5 Satan also taught Genun to bring strong drink out of com; and
this Genun used to bring together companies upon companies in drink-houses; and
brought into their hands all manner of fruits and flowers; and they drank
together.
6 Thus did this Genun multiply sin exceedingly; he also acted
with pride, and taught the children of Cain to commit all manner of the
grossest wickedness, which they knew not; and put them up to manifold doings
which they knew not before.
7 Then Satan, when he saw that they yielded to Genun and
hearkened to him in every thing he told them, rejoiced greatly, increased
Genun's understanding, until he took iron and with it made weapons of war.
8 Then when they were drunk, hatred and murder increased among
them; one man used violence against another to teach him evil taking his
children and defiling them before him.
9 And when men saw they were overcome, and saw others that were
not overpowered, those who were beaten came to Genun, took refuge with him, and
he made them his confederates.
10 Then sin increased among them greatly; until a man married
his own sister, or daughter, or mother, and others; or the daughter of his
father's sister, so that there was no more distinction of relationship, and
they no longer knew what is iniquity; but did wickedly, and the earth was
defiled with sin, and they angered God the Judge, who had created them.
11 But Genun gathered together companies upon companies, that
played on horns and on all the other instruments we have already mentioned, at
the foot of the Holy Mountain; and they did so in order that the children of
Seth who were on the Holy Mountain should hear it.
12 But when the children of Seth heard the noise, they wondered,
and came by companies, and stood on the top of the mountain to look at those
below; and they did thus a whole year.
13 When, at the end of that year, Genun
saw that they were being won over to him little by little, Satan entered
into him, and taught him to make dyeing-stuffs for garments of divers patterns,
and made him understand how to dye crimson and purple and what not.
14 And the sons of Cain who wrought all this, and shone in
beauty and gorgeous apparel, gathered together at the foot of the mountain in
splendour, with horns and gorgeous dresses, and horse races, committing all
manner of abominations.
15 Meanwhile the children of Seth, who were on the Holy
Mountain, prayed and praised God, in the place of the hosts of angels who had
fallen; wherefore God had called them "angels," because He rejoiced
over them greatly.
16 But after this, they no longer kept
His commandment, nor held by the promise He had made to their fathers; but
they relaxed from their fasting and praying, and from the counsel of Jared
their father. And they kept on gathering together on the top of the mountain,
to look upon the children of Cain, from morning until evening, and upon what
they did, upon their beautiful dresses and ornaments.
17 Then the children of Cain looked up from below, and saw the
children of Seth, standing in troops on the top of the mountain; and they
called to them to come down to them...
24 ..After this a hundred men of the
children of Seth gathered together, and said among themselves, "Come, let
us go down to the children of Cain, and see what they do, and enjoy ourselves
with them."
25 But when Jared heard this of the
hundred men, his very soul was moved, and his heart was grieved. He then arose
with great fervour, and stood in the midst of them, and adjured them by the blood
of Abel the just, "Let not one of you go down from this holy and pure
mountain, in which our fathers have ordered its to dwell."
26 But when Jared saw that they did not receive his words, he
said unto them, "O my good and innocent and holy children, know that when
once you go down from this holy mountain, God will not allow you to return
again to it."
27 He again adjured them, saying, "I adjure by the death of
our father Adam, and by the blood of Abel, of Seth, of Enos, of Cainan, and of
Mahalaleel, to hearken to me, and not to go down from this holy mountain; for the moment you leave it, you will be reft of life and of
mercy; and you shall no longer be called 'children of God,' but 'children of
the devil.'"
28 But they would not hearken to his
words.
29 Enoch at that time was already grown
up, and in his zeal for God, he arose and said, "Hear me, O ye sons of
Seth, small and great--when ye transgress the commandment of our fathers, and
go down from this holy mountain--ye shall not come up hither again for
ever."
30 But they rose up against Enoch, and
would not hearken to his words, but went down from the Holy Mountain.
31 And when they looked at the daughters of Cain, at their
beautiful figures, and at their hands and feet dyed with colour, and tattooed in
ornaments on their faces, the fire of sin was kindled in them.
32 Then Satan made them look most
beautiful before the sons of Seth, as he also made the sons of Seth appear of
the fairest in the eyes of the daughters of Cain, so that the daughters of Cain
lusted after the sons of Seth like ravenous beasts, and the sons of Seth
after the daughters of Cain, until they committed abomination with them.
33 But after they had thus fallen into this defilement, they
returned by the way they had come, and tried to ascend the Holy Mountain. But
they could not, because the stones of that holy mountain were of fire flashing
before them, by reason of which they could not go up again.
34 And God was angry with them, and repented of them because
they had come down from glory, and had thereby lost or forsaken their own
purity or innocence, and were fallen into the defilement of sin.
35 Then God sent His Word to Jared,
saying, "These thy children, whom thou didst call 'My children,'--behold
they have transgressed My commandment, and have gone down to the abode of
perdition, and of sin. Send a messenger to those that are left, that they may
not go down, and be lost."
36 Then Jared wept before the Lord, and asked of Him mercy and
forgiveness. But he wished that his soul might depart from his body, rather
than hear these words from God about the going down of his children from the
Holy Mountain.
37 But he followed God's order, and preached unto them not to go
down from that holy mountain, and not to hold intercourse with the children of
Cain.
38 But they heeded not his message,
and would not obey his counsel.

V.
11 The Holy Mountain along with the valley below became the first amphitheater where
heavy metal concerts were held.
v.
12 The righteous on the Holy Mountain heard the music as noise; little
different than many of us today. Notwithstanding that, they listened
attentively for a whole year. Their entire attention was drawn to “rock”
(mountain) music. They surely did not like what they heard but the hedonism
that they were watching. The instruments were the “shiny objects” that beaconed
the righteous to come away from their sanctuary to the world.
v.
13 It took one year of conditioning, but the outcome was conversion; “, Genun
saw that they were being won over to him little by little.” By watching and
listening, they essentially forgot about God and subsequently their minds were
won over.
With
that accomplished, Satan entered into Genun again, “and taught him to make
dyeing-stuffs for garments of divers patterns and made him understand how to
dye crimson and purple and what not.” They began to dress gaudily, meaning that
each of them became the “shiny object” that would take the focus off God. Think
of Ru Paul’s parade of gaudily dressed cross-dressers. Think of heavy metal
musicians. Think of how Christians even dress in modern times!
v.
14 Now in their gaudy apparel, Cain’s progeny were “committing
all manner of abominations.” Abominations are things disgusting to God.
Gain, think of Ru Paul and his parade and “stars” like Madonna, Elton John,
Miley Cyrus, and others like them. Acting wickedly means abominations. Who
demonstrates that better than what is seen at concerts and other genre?
v. 15 Meanwhile, now only a few, the righteous worshipped and
prayed on the Holy Mountain, undoubtedly for their children, grandchildren and
the disgusting ones below. Because of that, “God had called them "angels,"
because He rejoiced over them greatly.” Purity and modesty overjoyed God, but
that self-control would not last for long!
v. 16 “After this, they no longer kept His commandment.” They
ignored the will of God in the pursuit of pleasure. Pleasure, to the
theretofore “righteous” drew them away from the Will of God, and they were set
to do things their own way. Note that soon God would destroy them, after giving
them plenty of time to come back to Him.
Then the righteous ones “relaxed from their fasting and praying,
and from the counsel of Jared their father.” Summarily, they disregarded the
Will of God; not that they quit believing in Him but got lax and their worship
and devotions.
“They kept on gathering together on the top of the mountain, to
look upon the children of Cain.”
They preferred entertainment and debauchery to righteous. They
were no longer selective in what their eyes saw and their ears heard. They preferred
whatever the wicked ones projected onto their mountain top.
“From morning until evening, and upon what they did, upon their
beautiful dresses and ornaments.”
They were attracted to beauty continually to the point they
never took any time for God. It was a preview of our own Sunday mornings in
modern times. Fun and pleasure usually takes precedence over worship. It is not
that they had left God… yet… but they soon would. They clung to God on the
pinnacle of their “church” but would soon do awful things on its main floor,
even in front of the congregation.
v. 17 God commanded the
righteous to stay on the mountain for their safety. If they went down, there
would be no re-entry to that place of safety. That is a foreshadowing of Hebrews
6:6 — “If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing
they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh and put him to an open shame.”
If they came down from their place of safety, preservation, they would be defecting
from God.
Albeit God, commanded them to stay,
“they called to them to come down to them.” They would choose their
master, so to speak.
v. 24 Finally, skipping a few
verse, about 100 of the righteous would adventure out, saying, "Come, let
us go down to the children of Cain, and see what they do, and enjoy ourselves
with them." They may as well said, Let’s party with them because they knew
in advance what the enjoyment was on the ground; things like drunkenness,
public sex, child molestation and such.
They pretended to only be interested
in the lifestyle of sinners. Perhaps, their mission, they would tell
themselves, was to straighten them out.
Unless you are Jesus, never go
to their turf, because the flesh is weak to temptation. Jesus overcame
it but you cannot. If you could overcome temptation; that would make you the
God!
v. 25 Jared, the righteous, told
them the Will of God, as if they did not already know it; "Let not one of
you go down from this holy and pure mountain, in which our fathers have ordered
us to dwell."
They were leaving holiness and
purity for fertility, implying sexual intercourse, and filthiness.
They were ordered to stay on the
Holy mountain, but they disregarded the orders. They saw it as a way for God to
control their lives, but rather the orders were to protect those same lives.
v. 26 Jared warned them again. “Once
you go down from this holy mountain, God will not allow you to return again to
it." God was not testing them. It was stay or else! It was not thinking,
Go ahead, God has the grace to allow re-entry. The strait gate to heaven
is not revolving but allows entry only. If they were silly enough to remain in
the rotary, there was only one outlet, and that was down. “Heaven” has no down
stairway to return to the world; when up, the righteous must remain up.
v. 27 Jared continued to warn them:
“The moment you leave it, you will be reft of life and of mercy; and you shall
no longer be called 'children of God,' but 'children of the devil.'" If
you go down you will die and remain dead! Their gens, or DNA, would be altered
by such a change in domain. The “atmosphere” above was pure but below it
was polluted, and the pollution down there would change them so much that they would
never be able to change back. Likewise, “born again” is not having the ability to
crawl back into the sanctuary of the womb after having experienced the world.
v. 28 “But they would not
hearken to his words.” They would not
miss this episode of “Life in Cainville” for anything! Their minds were made firm.
Hell nor high water would persuade them otherwise, and they would get to
experience both!
v. 29 “Enoch verified Jared’s
warning “--when ye transgress the commandment of our fathers, and go down from
this holy mountain--ye shall not come up hither again for ever."
It was not opinion nor even
doctrine; it was a fact. If any slide down the mountain, they cannot slide back
up it, or even work their way up the treacherous terrain. Those that God placed
up must stay up; there would be no conjugal visits with those down there!
V. 30 “But they rose up against
Enoch, and would not hearken to his words, but went down from the Holy
Mountain.”
They were strong-willed people.
Persuasion meant nothing to them. Even the threat of death would not deter them
once temptation grabbed hold of them. They would just visit the place. It would
have no stronghold on them! It appears that God was not the one that would keep
them there, but sin — the pleasure of it all. To the righteous, although they
were in Paradise, they saw the Hell below as the real Garden of the Lord. After
all, it was much more fertile than on the mountain top.
V. 31 Unknown to the naïve on
the Holy Mountain, they thought they were looking at Paradise, but God sent
word that it is “Perdition” (damnation). Not that it was hot and isolated, but
because the atmosphere below would cause death.
Those preserved on the Holy
Mountain would cross God’s seal — an invisible barrier — and enter into
damnation. There was no fence at all but an invisible abyss that prevented
danger from going up to them.
Cain’s progeny could not go
there because of the Spirit between them and the others, but could only beacon for
them to come down.
That should be a warning for
Christians not to tread the turf of sinners, but only invite them into a place
of righteousness.
v. 32 Satan made each tribe look
handsomer than what they were. Not that they became more handsome or beautiful,
but that Satan changed their viewpoints. There was a reason for that… “So that
the daughters of Cain lusted after the sons of
Seth like ravenous beasts, and the sons of Seth after the daughters of
Cain, until they committed abomination with them.”
Satan did his magic on them so
that they would behave differently than they ought. Because of deception, the very
nature of each became more beastly than before. Their kinds had deviated from
the original. The righteous became like the righteous but none of the
unrighteous became like the righteous. That’s just not how sin works.
Cohabiting with evil never makes evil more divine, but divine cohabitating with
evil increases the evil in both.
v. 33 But after they had thus fallen
into this defilement, they returned by the way they had come, and tried to
ascend the Holy Mountain. But they could not, because the stones of that holy
mountain were of fire flashing before them, by reason of which they could not
go up again.
This should be self-explanatory
— nobody can enter into sin and expect to return to righteousness. Note that
they wanted to turn around from their backslide, God was not kidding. There is
not turning back from a backslide because it is apostasy to voluntarily lose
affection for God, defect from Him, and then expect a return to His sanctuary.
That would be taking the Name of God – Jesus — vainly. He will be on the ship
for the long haul, not just at home base after sightseeing!
v. 34 God was angry. Although He
had never left nor forsaken them, “They had come down from glory, and had
thereby lost or forsaken their own purity or innocence.” They had forsaken God
and broke the seal themselves between glory and defilement.
V. 35 After the 100 had gone from
glory to perdition, and note that is a change in their natures, or genomes, God
said to Jared, “ Send a messenger to those that are left, that they may not go
down, and be lost."
Those who went down were lost.
They could not climb back up nor would God lift them up! They were lost and any
thereafter who would do likewise are lost. God’s children are those that He
gives birth and lives in His Spirit. Those who remove themselves from the Comfort
of His Spirit are lost; not just one foot out, but the whole body stepping away,
along with the mind and the spirit.
V. 36 “Then Jared wept before
the Lord, and asked of Him mercy and forgiveness. But he wished that his soul
might depart from his body, rather than hear these words from God about the
going down of his children from the Holy Mountain.” (Self-explanatory but just
think how God feels — Toughlove!)
V. 37 Jared remained faithful.
He stayed put! He had experienced temptation and knew its power. He “preached
unto them not to go down from that holy mountain, and not to hold intercourse
with the children of Cain.”
That “intercourse” is dual-fold;
not to have carnal knowledge with nor even associate with unrighteous people…
unless if they come to you in your safe-space!
v. 38 “But they heeded not his
message, and would not obey his counsel.”
What happened after that? They
did as they pleased and went down to the place of pleasure. Some wanted to come
back but the invisible wall for them was that the spirit was no longer there to
allow them re-entry. They had not been on vacation from God but had departed
from Him. Sure, they still believed in God and wanted back in, but on their
terms!
Others loved it there and had no
desire to come back. They enjoyed damnation and would to the end. They would
sink rather than enter the door to grace. They were still enjoying pleasure as
the water raised and the Ark floated away, even with the door closed. They were
reprobate and did not even care!
As a sidenote, it is obvious
that the writer of this, and it seems to be God by the hand of Enoch, neither are
Calvinistic!
