38 Saul armed
David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he
armed him with a coat of mail.
39 And David
girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved
it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved
them. And David put them off him.
40 And he took
his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and
put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was
in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
45 Then said
David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and
with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of
the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
46 This day will
the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine
head from thee. (1 Sam 17)
King Saul was a head taller than the average man, and David was the epitome of average! Saul had his armorbearer clothe David with the king’s armor and equip him with the king’s sword. They did not fit David because Saul was huge for those times, and his sword would have been long and heavy. Saul’s armor would have been a burden to David, and he put them off. Then David chose five smooth stones out of moving water, ad put them in his bag. Then David went to Goliath in the Name of the Lord of hosts for the Lord to deliver Goliath’s head.
This story seems so straightforward. It is not! I have written before that there were two sets of armor; one belonging to Saul and the other to God. Saul’s armor wouldn’t fit; God’s armor fits all sizes! The armorbearer put all the king’s armor on David. Likewise, since God provided the water and the stones, David put on God’s “armor,” or as scripture says, “the whole armor of God” (Ephes 6:13). The one smooth stone represents “the sword of God” (Ephes 6:17). Read that chapter and you should be able tom detect what the other four stones represented, or if you’re not so inclined, just read my blog: https://kentuckyherrin.blogspot.com/2016/08/five-smooth-stones.html. Obviously the brook with its moving water represents the Holy Spirit who is sometimes referred to as “Living Waters.”
Always remember, when anyone comes “in the Name of God” it is Jesus with whom they come. The spirit of Jesus was with David when he killed “Satan” that day. Goliath represents Satan. Goliath may have had Satan enter into him, although scripture does not say so. He may have been “the Beast” of that time along with the Serpent, Judas Iscariot, and the Antichrist, all who have or will have Satan within!
Saul’s doctrine represented the doctrine of the world. He required physical weapons and physical safety whereas David need only spiritual weapons and safety. David was safe because he had in his pouch “the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked” (Ephes 6:16). “Fiery darts” from the Greek also means “angry spear.” Well, guess who carried a spear intended for David? The angry giant Goliath (1 Sam 17:7). Goliaths spear was weightier than Saul sword, but not the “sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.” (Ephes 6:17).
Who is the Word? The Spirit of God! What’s His Name? Jesus is the Word of God. Jesus was with David that day way back when, and when we fight principalities, Jesus is with us if we use and wear the whole armor of God!
A “principality” is a small kingdom ruled over by princes or princesses. Goliath represented the small kingdom of Philistine, and as such he was not a king, but a lesser person; maybe not royalty, but certainly their “prince” at that time in that their livelihood depended on Goliath’s fate.
Goliath was certainly of flesh and blood, but I believe that a demon spirit had entered him. Based on the importance of David’s life and genealogy, I also believe that Satan took on the assignment himself because the outcome was so crucial. In other words, David symbolically killed Satan that day, but until God is through with Satan, he will have multiple vicarious deaths. However, he is not all the way dead until God declares him dead! Years later, Judas was the “Goliath” in whom Satan entered, and who endeavored to kill the “son of David” – Jesus.
The positive outcome was that David became king. For us, the positive outcome since David lived, we have become royal priests (1 Pet 2:9) if we wear the same type of armor that David wore – the whole armor of God!
