Science is the learning of knowledge about the physical entities in existence. As such, it ignores the spiritual which concerns itself with the supernatural existence. Science is based on tangible evidence and religion on faith. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Heb 11:1). That is imperative information! “Substance” includes physical things and also the “essence.” Albeit “essence” is identified as things “natural” it also includes things beyond the natural (i.e., the supra-natural).
Natural things can be objectified and measured. Christianity
objectifies and measures God. God came in the flesh to objectify Him for those
who need the evidence that God exists. Then God was measured by His miracles,
primarily that He overcame the world and was resurrected. Science believes that
death is certain and irreversibly so (non-isentropic), whereas Christianity
disputes that and provided the evidence of that with the death and
resurrection of Jesus. Ultimately, the crucifixion of Jesus was a scientific “experiment”
to prove to the world that God is God! God operationalized the contention by objectifying
Himself with human form.
The scientific evidence that God Exists is that thousands
saw Him die on the Holy Cross, and thousands saw Him alive after a natural person
would stinketh. Scientists and lawyers would be wise to accept God’s Existence because
the Old Testament predicted the outcome, and the New Testament validated the
prediction. Jesus made the Bible “scientific” when what God said would happen,
happened, just as He said it would!
Modern Christians must believe the evidence. Although “faith”
is what God looks for, “faith” is again the “evidence of things not seen.”
Jesus provided the evidence that the Unseen God is real. “Evidence” is just evidence
and merely furnishes proof.
Science does the same thing. It furnishes proof that their
hunch is correct. At one time, some scientists had a hunch that oil came from
long dead dinosaurs and prehistoric vegetation. Because those life forms
contain carbon and so does petroleum, the hunch was that carbon-based energy sources
were fossil fuels. It turns out that those with that hunch were “colossal
fools.” Now the hunch is two different things: (1) That fossil fuels are not
from fossils but amoeba and protozoa beds under tremendous pressure, or (2)
something else that we cannot guess at yet!
Most have been taught that dinosaurs are the source of
fossil fuels. Anyone who thought otherwise were considered either fools or
religious fanatics. Now the scientific evidence points elsewhere. The point is
that scientists do not really know but misled the world for centuries! Science
changes things to suit their biases; God does not. He is the same yesterday,
today, and tomorrow. The hunch of Christians is that God created fuel. Surely
if He can score the Big Bang, He must be able to fuel what he generated. Not
that the Big Bang was fossil fuels, but some ultimate Energy Source!
Scientists hope their hunches are correct and
test them as best they can so that their egos are satisfied. Scientists are rewarded
several ways: monetary, prestige, pride, and by their recognized knowledge.
They attempt to discover the source of things to magnify themselves, and
perhaps some do to help the world. Those characteristics are human nature and
are damning in the Christian religion. “Hope” from a Christian perspective is contentment,
having assurance that what they believe is real. That too can be measured! The
Ten Commandments are not “commandments” at all, but God’s Will metricized. Those
with hope are tested by their faith. God uses that “test” to judge the faith of
Christians. That is the ultimate scientific experiment!
Christians have faith, but they also have scientific
evidence, to wit: “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard,
which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have
handled, of the Word of life; (For the
life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you
that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us…” (1
John 1:1-2).
“That which” is the Word who was operationalized in the
Flesh as Jesus. Jesus is the material substance of God. They saw Him, touched
Him, and bear witness (testify) to those scientific facts. The apostles were “scientists”
who were so persuaded that Jesus IS God manifested that they gambled
their possessions and very lives to attest to that. They were not worried,
though, because Jesus validated the evidence with His death and Resurrection.
The hypotheses of scientists are that existence happened
by random chance and improved itself by survival of the fittest and evolution.
On the other hand, Christians have no hypotheses; what they see is all the
evidence they need.
Faith is measured by the patriarchs in the Old Testament.
Abraham was willing to sacrifice his only son as God would because he was so
certain that there was enough evidence of God. His righteousness was accounted
to him as faith. What did Abraham know that the others did not know? He saw the
physical universe and knew God. Christians should take that as proof as well: “For
his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have
been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things
that have been made. So they are without excuse” (Rom 1:20).
Rather than creation being the hypothesis, for
Christians it is the proof! Christians examine the world and the heavens
and understand that it could never be by chance. It turns out that scientists
have the faith of gamblers — great faith indeed and only superficial hope. Who
loses either way? Evolutionary scientists lose their immortal souls!
Scientists do not create anything. They discover existing
things and propose causes for their existence. They do not even claim to be
gods, but foolish people accept them as gods. Science belongs to God because science
is order out of chaos. God ordered the universe into existence and scientists
are mere investigators as to how. “Science,” therefore, is not bad. God is the
author of all things scientific. What is bad are those who discover wrongly,
just as Columbus, whose error caused him to stumble upon a New World. Scientists
also stumble upon the truth, and then conceal their accident with complicated
explanations.
Columbus was given divine inspiration. Although he stumbled
upon the Americas, God gave him a compass: “It is he that sitteth upon the
circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that
stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to
dwell in” (Isa 40:22). The shape of the world is a circle with it generated 360
degrees to form a sphere. God revealed to Columbus that the earth was not flat
as it appeared to be, but a sphere! Columbus believed God so much that he
risked peril for his faith. His “science” was based on the good knowledge of
God.
Columbus also saw something else if he was savvy. His “map”
was overhead. He looked at the cosmos as a curtain with a map thereon. The “flat”
heavens guided him to confirm his hypothesis that the earth is round. He knew
the Zodiac. The words of Isaiah revealed to him that the stars could guide him,
and they did. The magi were guided to Jesus by the same knowledge and found
Jesus. The answer to the origin of
existence is in the stars and there are two ways to research: (1) Human
experimentation, or (2) Divine Knowledge.
This background on science is to waylay fears. Weak
Christians fear that science will disprove God. That can never be done, so
cease the worrying. Unless science is falsified, it can only provide evidence
of God. Fear of science is the source of fear itself. If science is right, then
there is no hope. Christians should hope that science reveals the truth and spreads
it to the world. Rather than an enemy of God, science can only, if scientific,
reveal the truth. Care must, however, be taken to not take things as scientific
when they are not. The cleverest scientists design their tests to provide
desired results. Many scientists want their theories to be right so much that
they accept any evidence that they can find as truth.
That background was laid to allay the fear in Christians of scientific
exploration. They merely discover what God created. It means only that Christians
keep them on course with truth. God’s Word is ultimate truth, and with that, we
cannot go wrong. When the Bible says that the earth is round, saying otherwise
is foolishness. God revealed in Genesis 1 and 2 the origin of the Universe and mankind.
If science is accurate and truthful, then what God said should coincide with
what scientists discovery.
With that, perhaps one scientist has stumbled upon the
truth. Michio Kaku may be the “Columbus” of the 21st Century! The
next commentary will compare God’s version of the origin with the scientific
version. Perhaps the two claims are closer than they seem. In fact, they should
be measuring what God did!
